New proposed standards from the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) on pollutants including Benzene and B(a)P, two cancer causing agents, have arrived on the Environmental Registry. These new standards are unique as they have been put in place to protect human health, not only the environment. Essentially, the idea of health based standards is a novel step in the right direction for the MOE, and we hope that the new thresholds will be passed and enforced as soon as possible.

In the meantime, we are encouraging citizens to comment on the proposed standards; as a resident of Ontario, you retain the right to comment on any change to the environmental regulation (in this case, the implementation of new standards). As the provincial government is currently looking for feedback and input on the standards, we are encouraging community members to reinforce the idea of more stringent, health based thresholds with their comments. Let the government know that you want them to enforce these standards, thereby protecting your environment and your health.
We are currently in the process of sending out a letter to each North Hamilton and Beach Strip resident with instructions on how to comment, as well as some additional information on the proposed standards.
